New Zealand is a nation of small businesses, with over 97% of all businesses in the country employing 20 people or less. In fact, many small Kiwi businesses have enjoyed huge international success (look at Xero, RocketLab, and Vend). However, developing a new business here is more difficult than ever.

With so many big players in the market, it can be incredibly difficult to reach potential customers. Businesses need to be creative in their marketing and find new avenues to reach their target markets, but common advertising platforms have pitfalls:

  • Search Engine Marketing: extremely competitive and can get expensive
  • Social media: considered the least reliable form of advertising in the world
  • TV or billboards: too expensive to be a long term solution for small business.

One potential way to reach millions of potential Kiwi customers online (on a budget you can afford) is through Stuff Ads, hosted on New Zealand’s largest local news site. Research has shown that news sites are 4 times more trustworthy than social media, which increases your chances of winning customers – and whether your budget is $ 5 or $ 500, Stuff Ads will pay off.

How do Stuff Ads work?

You can create your ad in minutes by following a simple step-by-step process. You can also choose the type of ad you prefer: display or native placement.

  • Display: with a display ad, you create an eye-catching image that will display next to the right column of the Stuff website, where customers will then click through to your website.
  • Native: with a native ad, you choose a cover image, title, and description that you think will grab the attention of readers. Your ad will then be placed among other Stuff items, and potential customers will click on your website.

Case Study: Kind Face Increases Sales Thanks to Stuff Ads Campaign

When Covid-19 hit, Chris and Sarah Larcombe launched Kind Face, offering three-layer linen face masks produced in New Zealand from natural materials sourced from local suppliers. As a newly created start-up with a very small marketing budget, the challenge for Chris and the Kind Face team was to bring their story and brand to Kiwis.

After exploring online advertising channels like Facebook and Google and finding that they weren’t suitable for the Kind Face brand, Chris turned to Stuff, who he saw as more aligned in terms of the values of the brand.

Chris decided to make the most of Stuff’s self-service advertising platform for SMBs, Stuff Ads, which gave him the power to create and manage his own ads. The campaigns featured both display and native ads, with national reach on the Stuff mobile site, targeting audiences such as lifestyle enthusiasts, professionals and sports enthusiasts.

“The Stuff Ads platform is very easy to use and allows me to track ad performance myself without the need for third party assistance,” says Chris. “And there’s a feel-good factor to using it because it’s a locally owned platform.”

One of Kind Face’s goals was to sell 100% of what they could do during level 4 blocks, which is between 100 and 120 masks per day. Their first round of Stuff ads really got the momentum going, and 30% of the sales in a 10 day (2 week) period were generated by Stuff Ads.
