Zulum media strategist Isa Gusau wins UK University honor
Malam Isa Gusau, Governor of Borno State, Special Advisor to Professor Babagana Zulum for Public Relations and Strategy, graduated with a Masters (MA) in Media and Public Relations with Highest Honors from the University of Leicester in UK.
Unlike Nigerian universities which only rank graduate degrees, UK universities rank master’s degrees starting with Pass classification for ‘C’ students, Merit for ‘B’ students, and Distinction for ‘C’ students. “AT”.
Gusau had requested in 2020 a one-year study leave graciously granted by Professor Zulum, after which he moved to the United Kingdom in September 2020, from where he supervised the Governor’s daily media activities by working remotely with his colleagues, coordinating his own office with daily contributions on publicity material, working with and mentoring dozens of social media associates and bloggers, and relating to over a hundred journalists while studying at the University from Leicester.
The University of Leicester has a 100 year history and it is one of the UK’s most respected academic institutions where only extreme commitments allow students to achieve top marks after each module is assessed undergoes a simultaneous double marking by different professors whose different marks must reasonably correspond. each year before the grades are approved by the academic commissions.
Wednesday’s graduation ceremony took place from afternoon to evening at the famous De Montfort Hall around the University of Leicester campus in Leicester. The graduation took place in person for the first time since the pandemic.
Malam Isa Gusau had previously completed a Bachelor’s degree with the highest First Class classification in Media, Public Relations and Advertising from Middlesex University in London. He holds another master’s degree and a postgraduate degree in labor relations and public relations from the University of Maiduguri. He also holds OND and HND in Mass Communication from Kaduna Polytechnic where he had scored 4.35 out of 5.0 in his exams last semester.
Gusau also holds on-campus course certificates in Leadership and Persuasive Communication at Harvard University’s Continuing Education Division in Cambridge, Massachusetts, USA; on Creative Writing at the University of Cambridge’s Institute of Continuing Education in Cambridge, UK; on Reputational Branding, Media Relations and Political Campaigns and Communications at Thompson Reuters in New York, USA. He has also taken, at different times, intensive online certified courses organized by Harvard University on communication strategies and crisis communication.
Gusau had also completed dozens of other media relations, communications and journalism courses inside and outside Nigeria.
Gusau is a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Public Relations, UK; the Nigerian Institute of Public Relations; the Public Relations and Communications Association, PRCA, UK; the International Public Relations Association, UK and the African Public Relations Association.
Malam Gusau has participated in several conferences, summits and bilateral meetings in 18 countries in Europe, Asia and Africa for the purposes of government media relations, professional networking, training and journalistic reporting. He had, at different times, visited 16 states across the United States for similar purposes.
Gusau also worked as a journalist for years. Before moving on to PR.
At The Daily Trust, Gusau was the first to win the Chairman of the Board’s Star Award and Cash Prize for Integrity in the Journalist category. He also received the editor’s letter of congratulations and a cash reward for his integrity. He had received a series of commendations from the Managing Director and Chief Operating Officer for the prudence, transparency, accountability and productive management of the regional offices in Niger and North East Nigeria. He also received performance-based incentives and accelerated promotions.
Gusau resigned from Daily Trust in March 2012, the same week he was promoted to deputy editor, to engage in public relations activities following his appointment by Governor Kashim Shettima as special adviser on media and advertising.
